"Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand." ~Confucious ~
At Cloud Forest Institute we believe that the triad of community, education and conservation is the key to a sustainable future. We bring these three elements together through Service Learning courses in ecology, natural sciences, politics, economics, and practical skills like permaculture, natural building, food production and storage, language, environmental remediation and more.
The Community Service Act of 1990 defines Service-Learning as:
"a method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience."
We also believe that it is equally as important to support independent study and cultivate skills for lifelong learning. CFI aims to offer programs of interest to students of many levels including short and long-term workshops and courses, internships, and residency programs for artists, researchers, and thesis students. Programs are place based, experiential, and endeavor to leave a long lasting impact on students and communities alike.
CFI provides program participants with the tax-deductible fund raising umbrella so that they may seek support from within their own communities. CFI charges a 10% administrative fee. All funds raised must be used to pay for CFI program fees or project material costs with budget approval. Request a scholarship fundraising packet for more information and guidance.
